They seem to be claiming that three options were to complicated for users

Ugh. Suddenly exporting myself onto wordpress and using either something to doublepost or syndicating the RSS feed is lot more tempting.

Your subject line? Pretty much my opinion. I was actually beginning to do so again, for prospective "what's this blogging lark" users it's nice and simple to use and the friends page is a great aggregator.

I'll get back to work on the gregarious/crossposting project shall I?

Heh. Yeah, as I've got a paid account, I can continue to use it, as most of the people I know use it, they can do so too. But it means that I'd have to stick a heavy warning about the ads to any friend I might suggest it to.

Edit: A quick check shows that you can still create a 'basic' community, or at least, I as a paid member can do so. But for how long?

There's also the issue of communities – will all new communities be ad supported too? If so, that's a fairly hefty count against them, as even if you ignore the fandom and RP groups that make vast numbers of new accounts, a lot of people will want to create communities and not have those communities plastered with ads.
