A cry for help...

I'm trying to set up an internet connection on my new PC, which is running vista. Initially, I was trying to connect through my mac (which has 2 network ports, is set up to share its connection, and worked fine with my old PC). Now, it's refusing to connect. Eventually I got it to somewhat admit there was something there but it just sat there trying to work out what it is.
I've tried directly plugging my PC into the connection (I'm connecting through a LAN), but it still just sits there claiming that it's trying to identify the network/connection. It's possible that this is due to some security setup where I am, I'll be asking the residence manager that it a hour or two when he gets back, but does anyone else have an idea what it might be?
