The point in the comments about Google Reader effectively killing off every other RSS/syndication/federation setup is a strong one. "The Stream" is how I always used to use LJ and, to an extent, how I still use DW, but neither ever integrated or took off with an easy way to share/link things, etc.

Combine that with FB working as a contacts book, a diary, an events planner, a birthday reminders system, etc. People are so very happy to give them all their data and open up a huge amount of private info because it Just Works.
