With only some 850,000 accounts being updated within the last 30 days, I'm surprised that LJ is considered a "giant." Of course it's also 2.30am and I've only skimmed the article, I admit.

At a guess, it's a relatively high number in terms of the lower internet penetration in Russia. Also, there's probably a fair number of people who have accounts for commenting and friends list, but rarely update.
