Right. So, referendum has happened. We lost. Fuck. This also means that I'll shortly be unemployed. On the other hand, I now actually have far more of an idea what I want to do, job-wise, than I did when I started. And the experience to hopefully get in there.

ExpandAaaaaaaaaanyway, enough dwelling on that. I'm planning on buying a laptop, and I want your advice )

Right. Since there seems to be a fair level of disagreement on what's the best place and/or best thing to get for my Laptop (in the discussion here and here: ), I figure it'll be both fun, and useful to me to make this into something of a competition.

However, I'd feel bad to be asking people to run around looking stuff up without any form of recompense for their hard work. Therefore, *everyone* that provides useful help/builds/whatever will get some form of thank you from me (we're talking of the level of "I owe you a pint or two"/"I buy something not fantastically expensive on your Steam wishlist for you"), and whoever 'wins' by finding the build that I use (or the nearest; I may well take whatever I like best, adjust it slightly to my own preferences) will get something a bit more substantial.

The current 'entries' (not that these people have specified them as such, they're just the most complete suggestions I've had so far) are:

An Alienware laptop from Hawklord/Ross
A Dell Laptop from ccooke
A Mac laptop from Wil (this one is less detailed both because the Apple website doesn't have a PDF build output like the others, and because Wil's suggestions were more vague.)
– There's also been the suggestion of waiting the week or so for it to be released, and getting the Dell Precision 6600.
A PC Specialist laptop from Anna
A PC Specialist laptop based on suggestions by theweaselking.

So far, as far as I can tell, the Dell beats the Alienware both in tech-specs and in price (it's cheaper), the only advantage the Alienware has is a Blueray reader. The Mac and the Dell are about the same in terms of techspecs. The Mac has the advantage of more ram (though more could be bought for the Dell), and being able to run Mac programs. The Dell has the advantage of being cheaper, and not having to split its hard disc space between two OS's. I may have missed stuff there. But wait! The PC Specialist laptop is has the best stats of all, for the lowest price!

So, roll up, roll up, more entries please! I'll keep track of what seems to be the front runners at any given moment, so people can find stuff to beat them. If necessary, I'll make new posts in order to keep this manageable. There'll be a cross-post of this at my Facebook, I'll copy over any frontrunning build.

Current Frontrunner: A PC Specialist laptop based on suggestions by theweaselking.
