Well, that's over with. Next?

Right. So, referendum has happened. We lost. Fuck. This also means that I'll shortly be unemployed. On the other hand, I now actually have far more of an idea what I want to do, job-wise, than I did when I started. And the experience to hopefully get in there.
Something I have been contemplating for a while, and which had gone in the "Things to do after the referendum" box, was getting myself a new computer. Thus, I am coming to you, my friends of the glowing box, for advice on such.
My current PC has two main issues; firstly, it's fairly old now so it doesn't have the power to run the newer games, secondly, it's somewhat battered and has a tendency to hang if I'm playing a game that pushes at its capabilities. Oh, and a third issue – it's not a laptop :D.
Having used a laptop fairly heavily for the last year I've decided that that's what I want to get; I love relaxing in a comfy chair as I read my email, lying in bed and saying goodnight to friends over IRC immediately before I close my eyes and wait for sleep to come.
I'm aware that I'll pay more or get less with a laptop. But I'm willing to pay more to get what I'm after, as it's what fits my usage.
So, my friends of the intertubes; I come to you for advice on what to get, what to avoid, where to get it or where to avoid.
I'm after something that'll be a good gaming machine as well as being usable for workstuff. As such, I'm going for a PC, not a Mac. I'm aware that being after a gaming laptop means it'll likely be painfully heavy, but portability is still something I want, so means of being less heavy would be good. I'm not convinced that a 17" monitor will provide a transcendentally better gaming experience than a 15" one, but I'm wondering if the 17" ones will generally have better stuff inside 'em.
I'm aware that this will cost me a fair chunk of money, but it's coming out of inheritance money (most of which is being left to earn good interest on, so I don't feel guilty for spending some on this), and it's something I'll get a lot of use out of.
So, any advice?
