It's purely a guess, but I'd lean more towards him seeing the reading figures spike and thinking it could cause him problems if it got spread too far and wide.

Same basic thing though, when you get down to it.

Yeah. People often don't realize how difficult a problem this is to deal with and the fact that people don't even feel that they can talk about it openly exacerbates the problem. I just completed a training course at uni about teaching undergraduates and the advice we were given was to NEVER approach a student about suspected plagiarism. Mark their paper as if it was original work, and take your suspicions and evidence to the head of department or whomever has been appointed to deal with plagiarism (it kinda just displaces the problem but at least covers your butt). If the student decides to fight you it can get very nasty.
