Bloody hell; you sound so much like my husband that if he was still using his LJ I'd have had to double-check it wasn't him posting this. He was just this evening telling me how pernicious advertising is because he distinctly remembers ads and jingles and so on from children's TV he watched 20-some years ago.
He does have a paid-for Spotify account, though, and says it's nearly an acceptable alternative to eMusic.
