I currently get to and from Uni on my Dad's old bike, because it's about a 30-40 minute annoying walk, or a 10-15 bike ride, and taking the bus takes longer, is unreliable as to time it takes to get there, cost money, and results in me getting little exercise. Unfortunately, because the bike I'm doing it on is about as old as I am, it's not in the best of shape. I've spent £25 on repairing since I started using it, and given that a new bike costs about £200, spending too much more than that on an old, old bike seems like a bad idea. And it needs repairing again (it has decided that the bottom two gears don't exist, making dealing with hills annoying). Thus, I am considering my transport options.

Which are, as I see it, fourfold:

  • Bike: Either repairing old, or getting a new. Reasonable option.

  • Walk: Wandering back and forth. Takes too long, and is deathly boring. Not a preferred option.

  • Bus Requires timing around the bus, rather than when I want to go, and ends up costing a fair bit. Not wanting to do it this way either.

Or.... (you could tell that was coming, couldn't you)

  • Other self powered transport: By which I'm actually thinking of rollerskates/blades (yes, I could get the kangaroo stilts things, but I don't think they'd really work for me). This randomly popped into my head, cause I've for a long time liked the idea of rollerblades, but never really known anyone who did it, thus not done anything about it.

The benefits would be that a pair of skates is likely cheaper than a new bike, and its something I've an interest in doing anyway. Also, I might end up using it for getting me other places too, since as long as I've got something to keep boots/the skates themselves in, I can swap between easily, whereas with a bike you need to lock it up somewhere, and it's a limit on what you can do cause you need to take it back home.

The problems would be finding a pair of skates in size 12, learning to use them, and whether they'd actually be a practical way of getting to and from Uni - how would they take the strain of that kind of use?

What do people think? And does anyone know enough on the subject/know someone who does to give me some advice?
