It's a small world. I worked in Playin' Games for ~7 years. Only Saturdays, mind you, but a long time nonetheless. Consequently I know a dozen if not more people who have also previously worked there, I'm pretty sure none of the existing staff would know me.
As a "serious" job I can't recommend it, but as long as you avoid accepting any real measure of responsibility it can be a lot of fun and often doesn't feel like work at all. Especially as the merchandise is something you can more easily take an interest in.
